1. Launch: Catholic Standard
The Catholic Standard, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington, launched a new design this week with the help of MG — and everyone here is thrilled to have been part of the reinvention of the venerable brand.
Typography is Bodoni (from ITC), and Archer, Mercury Text and the just-released Retina (all from our old friends at Hoefler & Frere-Jones). Thanks, as always to Jonathan Hoefler for making terrific type suggestions.
Matt Mansfield, Scott Goldman and Denise Reagan worked on the design, as well as training the staffs in editorial, advertising, circulation and marketing as part of the ongoing engagement to help the Archdiocese better position its message across platforms. Next up will be a redesign of the news websites, which will launch this fall.
We’ll post more print pages in coming days (and show some of the old design to better highlight the transformation), but for now we wanted to share the “good news” that the paper’s first issue in the new design came off the presses without a hitch.
Many thanks to Mark Zimmermann, the Standard’s editor, and Angela Flood and Bill Gorman at the Archdiocese for the opportunity to work on rethinking the paper — and El Pregonero, which launches next week.
Much more to come as we work with the Archdiocese.
